Segarra coined the term ‘mesencephalic artery syndrome’ and used the term ‘somnolent mutism’ to describe it [2]. Overall, occlusion of the basilar artery comprises 1% to 4% of all ischemic strokes [3]. But symptoms of top of basilar are a distinct subdivision of the former and need to be properly categorized.

Endovascular revascularization for basilar artery occlusion.
Basilar artery occlusion is one of the most devastating neurological conditions known to man. Though rare, patients with clinical syndromes localized to this anatomical region are often referred to acute stroke and endovascular units. Recent studies evaluating the efficacy of endovascular approaches to stroke have focused on anterior circulation syndromes. In this review, we examine the approac...
متن کاملMagnetic resonance imaging in brainstem ischemic stroke.
To evaluate the efficacy of magnetic resonance imaging in brainstem stroke, we studied 21 cases of clinically definite brainstem ischemic stroke with brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and conventional computed tomography (CT). MRI demonstrated brainstem lesions in 79% of the cases (16.5 out of 21), while CT revealed 33% (7 out of 21) when cases with suspicious lesions counted as 0.5. Altho...
متن کاملBasilar Artery Occlusion In A Young Man Related To Coinfection of Neurosyphilis and Human Immunodeficiency Virus
The meningovascular complication of syphilis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is not uncommon. A young man with no atherosclerotic and cardiac risk factors presented with acute brainstem infarct resulting from basilar artery occlusion. His condition deteriorated rapidly despite aggressive antithrombotic therapies. Brain imaging revealed old lacunes in addition to the current bra...
متن کامل[Stenting for symptomatic high-grade basilar artery stenosis].
BACKGROUND Stenosis of brain vessels in 5-10% of cases causes ischemic disesase of the brain. Atherosclerosis is a cause of stenosis in 95% of cases. Patients with basilar artery stenosis and recurrent ischemic attacks are candidate for stroke in 50% of cases in the first two years. CASE REPORT A 48-year old man presented with a 12-month history of transitory ischemic attacks, periodical loss...
متن کاملPrognosis of Patients With Symptomatic Vertebral or Basilar Artery Stenosis
Background and Purpose—There are limited data on the prognosis of patients with angiographically proved symptomatic stenosis of the intracranial vertebral artery or basilar artery. Methods—We studied 68 patients with 50% to 99% stenosis of one of the following arteries: intracranial vertebral (n531), basilar (n528), posterior cerebral (PCA) (n56), or posterior inferior cerebellar (PICA) (n53). ...
